Activities of the Union

The Past Pupils Union (PPU) was founded with the goal to provide a link to help keep past pupils of Terenure College connected to both the school and to each other. We are a connection from the past pupils back to the school, the rugby club, local charities and the Benevolent Fund (available to past pupils). The PPU committee members are active members of the college community both past and present. We take on-board feedback from stakeholders and introduce appropriate input into PPU policy.

The PPU also reaches out to other Leinster based schools – with the President and another committee member attending annual dinners of other PPU’s. The PPU maintains a database of past pupils. The database is used to notify past pupils of current events and we actively encourage feedback and ideas to add new or improve future social and fundraising events.

The PPU has an office in the school, with a Union secretary, Catherine Lynch, employed to help support the PPU. In order to fund and continue with our activities and main goals, we need your support in subscriptions. Please send your current contact details and any other comments/queries you may have to Catherine at info@nure.ie

The main events run by the PPU are:

Annual Dinner

This is the flagship event each year for the PPU and is normally attended by c.300 old school pals. The invitation is to all past pupils with special emphasis on gathering together, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50-year groups. Some recognition is also given at each year’s dinner for ex-pupils who have excelled in Business, Sports, Politics, Medicine, Law or the Arts. As well as an excellent opportunity to catch up with old friends, this night is a significant charity fund raiser for the PPU’s Charities including the Benevolent Fund.

Business Lunch

The lunch gives the PPU members an outlet to catch up with old friends or to bring clients along. Each year the event has been enhanced by great guest speakers drawn from several fields including business, sports and journalism. Typical attendance c.120 – 150 and we would like to increase this to allow for stronger business networking. Ably supported by industry commerce leading companies.

Annual Golf Event

Another popular day in the PPU’s calendar is the annual golf outing, which in recent years has taken place in the Grange in Rathfarnham. This is a friendly competition with the emphasis on providing past pupils with an opportunity to meet up, play some golf and enjoy the BBQ dinner afterwards. This event continues to be well supported at all age levels providing past pupils with a great opportunity to socialise. 100 played in 2018 being the largest in several years.

Tag Rugby

A new event to the 2018 calendar, this is run in the Rugby Club. The aim is for this to be a family event with children, friends, Partners, etc. welcome. A more family centric adds inclusive attitude to our events.

Annual Tennis Tournament

This is a doubles event with playing partners assigned on the day. All levels play in this evening event, with dinner and prize giving after, with the Bedford/MacNamee trophy up for grabs. It has been hosted in Templeogue Tennis Club in recent years.

Scholarship Trust

The Terenure College Past Pupils Scholarship Trust has recently been established and will be managed by the PPU. The PPU’s application for a “Charities Licence” was received in August 2018. The goal is to provide a Terenure College Secondary Education for eligible boys in the school catchment area with the first pupils set to start in September 2019. The set-up of the “Scholarship Programme” has long been an ambition of the PPU. The PPU’s primary focus is on the fund-raising side and it works closely with the principal of the Carmelite community, the school board of management, the Vincent de Paul and the Solas Programme (established by former pupils Johnny Bourke and Marty Doyle). A criteria document has been put in place around pupil selection. The hope is this programme will grow each year in line with the available financial support.

We would also like to become more involved with the Schools Transition Year students in job placements and re-establish the business networking database of our Past Pupils to be able to provide a strong business database of what our past pupils have to offer in business.
